Choosing Civility
“Choosing Civility: Individual Rights and Communal Responsibility” is the campus common theme for 2011/2012. “Civility” derives from the Latin word civitas, and the concept of a civic community. Our identities are shaped by the communities in which we live, and we, in turn, shape those communities for ourselves and for future generations. Civility is more concerned with what it means to be good citizens and good neighbors, than it is with politeness and good manners. Some of the sub-themes we hope to explore include: Does civility require limits on religious expression and practices? Civility and Difference: Cultural/Racial/Gender/Sexual Orientation/Able-bodiedness, etc. Civility on Campus Civility vs. Satire Civility, Pornography, and Artistic Expression Civility, Protests, and Civil Disobedience Civility and Sportsmanship Civility and Sustainability: Civic Responsibilities to Future Generations? Civility and Stress: Can Being Civil Improve our Health? Civility and Political Discourse Expressing Intense Emotions with Civility The Stranger in our Midst: Civility toward non-citizens
