Attention Future Salukis! Are you the first in your family to attend college? Are you interested in learning the “hidden rules” of higher education? How about a staff dedicated to providing personalized tools and support to equip you for a successful journey through college? If you: - are a first-generation student - will be a full-time freshman for the first time - have a demonstrated financial need - have a solid academic record - will live on campus ---you may qualify for the First Scholars™ program! What is First Scholars™? First Scholars™ provides personalized support on your pathway to graduation. Participation in the program includes a scholarship of $5,000 for each of the 20 students selected. First-generation college students from Illinois, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee are eligible for the program. We define “first-generation college students” as those whose parents have no education beyond high school. Financial need and solid academic ability as shown by ACT and/or SAT scores and high school GPA are among the scholarship criteria. Scholarships are renewable for three years as long as the First Scholar maintains at least at 2.5 GPA and meets other criteria established by The Suder Foundation. One of the requirements is that participants “Pay-It-Forward,” which involves volunteering and giving back to the program as upperclassmen by serving as mentors and tutors for incoming participants, or in other ways.
